song of the day – “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” | KATE BUSH | 1985 / 2022!

It’s honestly not common for me to be writing about a song that’s currently setting singles chart records here in the U.S. and around the globe, but then again, stranger things have happened.  AND STRANGER THINGS DID HAPPEN!

One of the posters for the fourth season of STRANGER THINGS.

Maryhope and I have been fans of the original Netflix series, the brilliant STRANGER THINGS, since the show began in 2016, the very same year I started the bloggy thing here.  Funny how STRANGER THINGS has inspired me to come out of my unintended blog-writing hiatus and write my first blog post in far too long.  Not to mention writing about a song I already wrote about in October 2016 (https://foreveryoung80s.wordpress.com/2016/10/19/song-of-the-day-running-up-that-hill-a-deal-with-god-kate-bush-1985/), the 1985 Kate Bush classic, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).”

This season of STRANGER THINGS has prolly been the best in the series so far, and its continued use of “Running Up That Hill,” serving as a recurring theme / favorite song of character Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink).  No spoilers here, but the use of “Running Up That Hill,” ESPECIALLY in Season Four’s “Chapter Four: Dear Billy,” is so intense and so unforgettable, that it’s prolly THE BEST use of any song in a television show ever, and certainly since the last six minutes of the 2005 SIX FEET UNDER series finale, “Everybody’s Waiting,” using Sia’s “Breathe Me.”

After watching the “Dear Billy” episode of STRANGER THINGS, I now know why Kate Bush was trending and “Running Up That Hill” was making waves on the singles charts around the globe.  And, as I watched all of these countries in Europe and Australia and New Zealand showing some serious love to “Running Up That Hill,” I was hoping — finally — that the U.S. would follow suit.

From Season 4’s memorable “Chapter Four: Dear Billy” episode.

“Running Up That Hill” (like parent album, HOUNDS OF LOVE; one of my all-time favorite albums) originally stopped at No. 30 in 1985 here in America.  In Canada, “Running Up That Hill” peaked at No. 27.  While, outside of North America, people all over the globe understood Kate Bush and the powerful “Running Up That Hill.”

In its original 1985 release, “Running Up That Hill” reached the Top 10 in (at least) Australia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and a No. 3 peak in Kate Bush’s U.K. homeland, her highest-charting U.K. single of the 80s there.

Amazing artwork of Sadie Sink and Kate Bush.

Since STRANGER THINGS started prominently featuring “Running Up That Hill,” new singles chart records all over the world have been broken for this nearly 37-year-old gem.  New peak positions have been recorded (including some No. 1 rankings), and here are just some of them (as of this writing, 14 June 2022):

  • Australia (No. 6, 1985; No. 1, 2022)
  • Canada (No. 27, 1985; No. 2, 2022)
  • Croatia (No. 4, 2022)
  • Czech Republic (No. 2, 2022)
  • Denmark (No. 6, 2022)
  • Finland (No. 6, 2022)
  • Greece (No. 2, 2022)
  • Hungary (No. 3, 2022)
  • Iceland (No. 4, 2022)
  • Ireland (No. 4, 1985; No. 3, 2022)
  • Lithuania (No. 1, 2022)
  • New Zealand (No. 26, 1985, No. 1 2022)
  • Norway (No. 4, 2022)
  • Singapore (No. 5, 2022)
  • Slovakia (No. 2, 2022)
  • Sweden (No. 1, 2022)
  • Switzerland (No. 10, 1985; No. 1, 2022)

In the United Kingdom, the original 1985 release peaked at No. 3, and “Running Up That Hill” is now battling for No. 1, currently at No. 2 (behind the popular Harry Styles hit, “As It Was”).  I think it has a chance to reach No. 1 in the U.K., while here in the U.S., it’s going to be a harder sell, but that doesn’t mean I’m not enjoying the ride.

Back in 1985, the BILLBOARD Hot 100 was based solely on radio airplay and record store sales.  In 2022, you have all sorts of metrics that still include radio airplay, plus digital singles sales, and streaming.  Not to mention the fact that ANY song from an album can chart on the Hot 100 if it’s got enough points, whereas in 1985, an actual physical single had to be released to be on the Hot 100.  That’s why, in 1985, you never saw Madonna’s “Into The Groove” (from DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN) or “Back In Time” by Huey Lewis & The News (from BACK TO THE FUTURE) on the Hot 100 — because they weren’t officially released as singles, though they were radio hits.

Madonna’s “Angel” 12″ B-side cover art for “Into The Groove.”

Not too long ago, BILLBOARD finally started allowing Xmas holiday titles to re-chart on the Hot 100 at the end of every year.  Wham’s No. 1 1984 U.K. hit, “Last Christmas,” for example, was never released as a single here in America, but with these re-entries every holiday season, it has become a BILLBOARD Hot 100 Top 10 hit, increasing in sales and radio airplay every Xmas.  So far, “Last Christmas” has gone as high as No. 7 on the Hot 100.  Pretty damn cool.

The single cover art for 1984’s “Last Christmas” by Wham!

But, apart from annual holiday hits and sales surges when a recording artist passes away (i.e. Prince, Whitney Houston, David Bowie), it’s quite rare for a song that is nearly 37 years old to re-enter the Top 50 of the BILLBOARD Hot 100, let alone the Top 10.

Fleetwood Mac’s No. 1 hit from 1977, “Dreams,” saw a big resurgence because of a 2020 viral TikTok video by Nathan Apodaca, where he is lip-syncing to “Dreams” whilst on a skateboard and drinking cranberry juice.  Other similar videos followed (including one by Mick Fleetwood himself), and the video’s popularity brought “Dreams” back to the Hot 100 briefly, stopping at No. 12, which was cool.

The STRANGER THINGS-inspired 2022 chart story of “Running Up That Hill,” however, is WAY cooler, not to mention unprecedented.

“Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” returned to the BILLBOARD Hot 100 on the chart dated 11 June 2022 at No. 8, a whopping 22 positions higher than its original No. 30 peak in October 1985.  Even its parent album, HOUNDS OF LOVE, has reached a new position, No. 12, on Billboard’s album chart dated 18 June 2022.  Phenomenal.

The cover art for Kate Bush’s 1985 masterpiece, HOUNDS OF LOVE.

Here are just a few achievements of “Running Up That Hill” so far on the BILLBOARD Hot 100:

  • Only the eighth song to re-enter the BILLBOARD Hot 100 IN the Top 10.
  • The longest run (for a non-holiday song) from its Hot 100 debut (7 September 1985) to the Hot 100’s Top 5 (18 June 2022) in the 63-year-history of the BILLBOARD Hot 100.  For those keeping score at home, that’s 36 years, nine months and two weeks.  Fucking impressive, and third longest-run overall.
  • “Running Up That Hill” is the first Top 5 song (overall) since 2014 by a solo singer, writer, producer, and the first song in almost 18 years by a solo female artist, writer and producer.  That’s way too long.

NERDY FUN CHART FACT: Kate Bush and the Hot 100 share a birthday within a week of each other (30 July vs. 4 August, 1958)!  I couldn’t believe it when I discovered that just tonight!

A STRANGER THINGS poster featuring Max (Sadie Sink).

One of my young co-workers at the non-profit I currently work for in Central Maine has been watching STRANGER THINGS with his daughter, and he told me today that she’s been listening to Kate Bush, because of STRANGER THINGS.  I think that’s so wonderful, and so incredible that a song (and artist) which didn’t get much time on American radio back in 1985 is seeing such a resurgence nearly 37 years later!

Kate Bush has never really been known to have her music in anything, whether it’s TV, films or commercials.  “This Woman’s Work” was featured in the 1988 John Hughes film, SHE’S HAVING A BABY, but that was before it was featured on Kate’s 1989 album, THE SENSUAL WORLD (Kate thanked John Hughes in her album’s liner notes).

Another poster for STRANGER THINGS, this one with Winona Ryder.

The creators of STRANGER THINGS, The Duffer Brothers, sought Kate Bush out, who was a fan of the show, and once they showed her how they wanted to use “Running Up That Hill,” Kate authorized its use.  STRANGER THINGS star Winona Ryder (who got her start in the 80s, the same time period the show is set), had also apparently been giving out hints over the course of the show’s run, lobbying to use Kate Bush’s music.  The response of “Running Up That Hill” has been nothing short of amazing, and has even surprised Kate herself, loving the fact her classic song is being discovered by so many young fans, as am I.

It’s weird — this new and incredible and beautiful popularity of a song from the year I graduated from high school; a song, an album, and an artist I have loved for so long FINALLY getting some long-deserved love here in the U.S., has made me so overjoyed, it’s nearly moved me to tears, I’m not kidding.  Never in my lifetime did I think that I would see or hear the words “‘Running Up That Hill’ is the biggest-selling single and most-streamed song in the country, and ranks at No. 4 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100.”

I don’t know how long Kate Bush and “Running Up That Hill” will be running up the singles charts, there’s literally no playbook for this.  I’m guessing it will be short-lived, but it’s truly a phenomenon I could have never imagined and yet I am so grateful for, and thanks to STRANGER THINGS, there is a thunder in my heart again for Kate Bush and “Running Up That Hill.”

song of the day – “We Got The Beat” | The GO-GO’s | 1981 / 1982.

On January 15, 2020, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame announced their 2020 inductees, which included a semi-diverse list of artists, including Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, The Doobie Brothers, T. Rex (long overdue), The Notorious B.I.G. and the only woman to be inducted in the 2020 class, Whitney Houston.

2020 rockhall

While it was hoped that Pat Benatar and Chaka Khan (as half of Rufus and Chaka Khan) would also be inducted this year, it’s not surprising they weren’t.  At the very least, the Dave Matthews Band didn’t get in.  How the fuck did they get nominated in the first place?  Christ.  But I digress.

A couple of days before the Rock Hall inductees were announced, the Academy Award nominees were announced.  Only one woman of color was nominated for a major acting award and no female directors (and there were many in 2019) were nominated.

Here on the blog, I know I’ve often mentioned the lack of women in the Rock Hall, and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way.  And, with the double whammy of the Oscar nods and the Rock Hall inductees this week, I’m hopeful that by 2021, we’ll see a lot more women nominated everywhere.

On the day the Rock Hall inductees were announced, I read an article online about 10 female artists who should be in the Rock Hall (and five who might be next).  At the top of the list, Carole King.  Abso-fucking-lutely.  One of the greatest songwriters of all-time, her 1971 TAPESTRY album was so huge, it spent 15 weeks atop the BILLBOARD album chart, won four Grammy Awards, has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and was the No. 2 album of the year in the U.S. for both 1971 and 1972, and the No. 22 album for 1973.  Pretty fucking amazing.

tapestry

Other women on the list I would certainly vote for included Björk, Kate Bush, Dolly Parton and The Go-Go’s.  Courtney Love and her band, Hole, were on the list as well, and as was written in the article, “this one should be a no-brainer.”  WTF?!  She is only on the list because she was married to Kurt Cobain.  She did a decent acting job in a couple movies in the late 90s (including 1998’s MAN ON THE MOON), and the band had one okay song, but really?  A “no-brainer?”  How about just NO!!!  I would much rather have chosen Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crow (both on the list) over Courtney Love, and those are artists I am not really a fan of.  And nowhere (again) on the list was Cyndi Lauper.

cyndi dolly

Future Rock Hall inductees (yes, please!) Cyndi Lauper and Dolly Parton.

I’ve made my case for Cyndi to be in the Rock Hall (or at least nominated, fer fuck’s sake) many times here on the blog, and you can go back and read about my reasons for why she should have been inducted years ago, so if you see #Cyndi2021 trending anywhere this year, that’s prolly why.

Even Steve Miller (who has had his own issues with the Rock Hall) called them out when he was inducted in 2016, and said, “keep expanding your vision, to be more inclusive of women.”  That’s goddamned right.

gogos

The Go-Go’s are definitely worthy of being in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.  The Los Angeles New Wave / Punk Rockers, formed in 1978 and consisting of singer Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin on rhythm guitar, Kathy Valentine on bass guitar, Charlotte Caffey on lead guitar and keyboards, and drummer Gina Schock, were the first all-female group to reach No. 1 on BILLBOARD’s album chart with their 1981 album, BEAUTY AND THE BEAT.

beauty+beat

One of two covers used for BEAUTY AND THE BEAT.

The album spent six weeks on top in March and April 1982, sold over two million copies in the U.S. alone, was the No. 2 album in America for 1982, and was one of the biggest debut albums of all-time.  To date, The Go-Go’s remain as the only all-female band to both write their own songs and play their own instruments on an album that reached No. 1 on the BILLBOARD album chart.  Still pretty impressive nearly 40 years later.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAT was released in early July 1981 on I.R.S. Records, and took awhile for it to catch on.  The first single released from the album, “Our Lips Are Sealed,” also took awhile to catch on, but it ultimately reached No. 20 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100, and also took its time leaving the survey, spending its 30th and final week on the Hot 100 in late March 1982.  It was on the chart so long, it ranked at No. 63 for all of 1982, beating out about 20 Top 10 hits, including their own single, “Vacation” (the No. 8 title track from their 1982 album).

our lips

The second single chosen from BEAUTY AND THE BEAT was “We Got The Beat,” released this week in January 1982.  Written by Charlotte Caffey, this song made its original 1980 appearance on Stiff Records, and in the U.K., was released as a single in July 1981.  It was so popular in the dance clubs, the import got so much play, it even reached No. 35 on BILLBOARD’s Dance chart in 1981.

The re-recorded version you hear on BEAUTY AND THE BEAT did not take long to debut on the BILLBOARD Hot 100.  Just a couple weeks after its release, it debuted at No. 79 in late January 1982, and just two weeks later, debuted inside the Top 40 at No. 31.  By mid-March, the catchy two-and-a-half-minute New Wave / Dance classic had beat its way to the Top 10.

beat US

For three weeks in April 1982, “We Got The Beat” stayed at No. 2 on the Hot 100, held off by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts’ monster hit, “I Love Rock N’ Roll,” and stayed on the chart for 19 weeks, exiting in early June 1982, nearly a full year after the release of BEAUTY AND THE BEAT.  “We Got The Beat” also reached No. 3 in Canada, No. 29 in Austria and No. 7 on BILLBOARD’s Mainstream Rock chart.

NERDY CHART FACT: Both “We Got The Beat” and the namesake of the The Go-Go’s originated from a song they covered, “Going To A Go-Go,” a 1965 hit by The Miracles, co-written, co-produced and sung by the legendary Smokey Robinson.  The week after “We Got The Beat” left the BILLBOARD Hot 100, a live version of “Going To A Go-Go” by The Rolling Stones debuted on the chart.  So, in a way, the Go-Go’s kept beating on until “Vacation” immediately followed The Stones into the Top 40 in July 1982.

stones gogo

The Go-Go’s broke up in 1985, after their third album, 1984’s TALKSHOW, Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin had successful solo careers, got back together briefly in 1990 and 1994, and have been together for over 20 years, and released their fourth album, the wonderful GOD BLESS THE GO-GO’s, in 2001.  In the summer of 2018, a musical about the band, HEAD OVER HEELS, premiered in New York.

“We Got The Beat” was named as one of “The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll,” a list that includes songs by the also-yet-to-be-nominated/inducted Siouxsie And The Banshees, Salt-N-Pepa, The B-52’s and the aforementioned Cyndi Lauper.

Today (January 18, 2020) was the fourth annual Women’s March, which started worldwide the day after Donald Trump was sworn in as President Gas.  This year’s protest march for women’s rights and more took place in many cities in the U.S., including an event in Portland, Maine.

philly march

From the 2020 Women’s March in Philadelphia, January 18, 2020.

A hope I have for 2020 and beyond is that more women everywhere are recognized for the incredible work they do, not just in entertainment, and are treated (at least) as well and as fairly as their male counterparts.  Nearly 40 years ago, five young women from L.A. shouted, “Yeah!  We Got The Beat!”, and it was an inspiration to women everywhere.  And women still have the beat and then some.  It’s time for men everywhere to take notice and start dancing to that beat.  It’s long overdue…

The Go-Go's

song of the day – “Lies” | THOMPSON TWINS | 1983.

casey-kasem-at40-abc-billboard-650

On June 15, 2014, Casey Kasem, host of the longtime countdown program, AMERICAN TOP 40, passed away at the age of 82.  From my first blog post (and prolly some more inbetween then and now), I explained how, in 1979, I was a geeky, lanky and somewhat lost 12-year-old living in Central Maine, had a few friends and not a lot of interest in much of anything, but at some point early that year, I discovered AMERICAN TOP 40, and was glued to it every weekend.  Not only could I hear the 40 biggest songs in the country every week, but also Casey’s cool trivia and facts about the songs and the artists, a trait I treasure to this day.  For me, the show was No. 1 with a bullet.  And still is (thanks to the re-airing of broadcasts of AT40 on iHeart Radio).american-top-40-casey-kasem

In honor of my radio hero, Casey Kasem, for the entire month of June, I will be highlighting a song each day (some days will have two songs!) that peaked in the Top 40 of the BILLBOARD Hot 100 (including five (real) one-hit wonders of the 80s), and with every blog post, just like on AMERICAN TOP 40, the hits will get bigger with each post.  On June 1, 2017, I featured a song that peaked at No. 40.  On June 30, I’ll feature a “song of the day” that went all the way to No. 1.

As Casey used to say on AT40, “And on we go!”

I have to say, as a self-proclaimed singles chart nerd, researching for each blog post in this tribute to Casey Kasem has been pretty awesome.  Casey would often say, “As the numbers get smaller, the hits get bigger!”  That may also true with how many songs peak at each position.  For the songs that reached No. 30 between 1979 and 1989, there were over 40.

What I found interesting (to me, anyway) is that, out of these 40+ songs that peaked at No. 30 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100, there were only two (real) one-hit wonders.  Also, I’ve already highlighted five No. 30 hits – (real) one-hit wonder Frankie Smith and “Double Dutch Bus,” “The One Thing” by INXS, “The Prisoner” by Howard Jones, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” and “Space Age Love Song” by A Flock Of Seagulls (one of my favorite blog pieces so far; from September 2016).

img_9736

Taken at the Seawall Picnic Area (part of Acadia National Park) on 9.12.2016, a photo I took of a lone seagull (no flocks), and included with my blog post that day for “Space Age Love Song,” a No. 30 hit on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 for A Flock Of Seagulls.

Another interesting quirk is that there are a lot of big-name artists who had No. 30 hits, but the hits themselves have been largely forgotten, including songs by The Bangles (“Be With You,” 1989), Tina Turner (“Two People,” 1987), Kool & The Gang (“Let’s Go Dancin’,” 1983), and two each by Daryl Hall & John Oates (“How Does It Feel To Be Back,” 1980, and “Possession Obsession,” 1985) and Toto (“Make Believe,” 1982, and “Stranger In Town,” 1984).

walk on by

Yet another interesting fact is how there were so many memorable hits from other decades that stopped at No. 30 (like Iron Butterfly’s classic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” Ted Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever,” the brilliant “Walk On By” by Isaac Hayes, “Come Monday” by Jimmy Buffet, “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers, “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, “She Talks To Angels” by The Black Crowes, “Firestarter” by Prodigy, R.E.M.’s wonderful “Man On The Moon,” the amazing “Love Is The Drug” by Roxy Music, and one of THE BEST pieces of music for all time, “Give It To Me” by The J. Geils Band), and yet, with the songs that peaked at No. 30 in the 80s, for whatever reason, most of those songs have been forgotten.

give it to me

Thankfully, though, there were a handful of cool ones, too.  There’s the aforementioned ones I’ve already posted on the blog, but then there’s “Dance Little Sister” by Terence Trent D’Arby, “Love Will Find A Way” by Yes, The Human League’s “Mirror Man,” and “Lies,” the first big American hit by a New Wave / Synthpop trio who weren’t at all related – Sheffield, England’s Thompson Twins.

lies

The trio of Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway made up the Thompson Twins in 1982, a time when MTV was so popular, it was affecting what was bought in stores and what was played on the radio, and a time when New Wave was becoming more prominent in mainstream music.  1982 was also the start of the Second British Invasion on the U.S. singles chart, which lasted through 1986.  Thompson Twins were a big part of that.

By 1982, Tom, Alannah and Joe already had one No. 1 song to their credit here in America – “In The Name Of Love,” which spent five weeks at No. 1 on BILLBOARD’s Dance chart in May and June 1982.

quick step

In October 1982, they released “Lies,” the first single from their upcoming third album, QUICK STEP AND SIDE KICK.  The band was still looking for their audience in their U.K. homeland, and it stopped at No. 67 on the U.K. singles chart there.

“Lies” would find an audience here in America a few months later, and it debuted at No. 80 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 in late January 1983, a couple of weeks after it spent two weeks at No. 1 on BILLBOARD’s Dance chart (with its B-side, “Beach Culture”).

As “Lies” made its climb up the Hot 100, the song’s parent album was released in February 1983, and with the Twins being signed to Arista Records, that meant, well, much like fellow Brits (The) Icicle Works in 1984, a name change for the album in the U.S. and Canada.  So, the name of the album was shortened to just SIDE KICKS.

side kicks

A month after the album’s release, “Lies” found its way to the Top 40.  By the end of March 1983, it reached No. 30, but got stuck there for three weeks, and was gone from the Top 40 after that.  It stayed on the Hot 100 for a respectable total of about four months.  “Lies” also reached No. 6 in New Zealand and the Top 30 in Australia and Canada.

Though the “Lies” follow-up single, “Love On Your Side” would fail to reach the Top 40 here in the U.S. (it stopped at No. 45 in early June 1983), Thompson Twins would finally find their U.K. audience, and that song was their first of five Top 10 hits, reaching No. 9.  QUICK STEP AND SIDE KICK was also certified Platinum there and reached No. 2 on the U.K. album chart.t twins logo

I loved Thompson Twins from the start.  I reserved any quick-stepping and side-kicking for at-home dancing, but I was a fan as soon as I heard “Lies.”  Not only was I hooked by the music, but I really enjoyed Tom Bailey’s style of singing.  Don’t know if there’s a particular name for it, I just enjoyed it.  All these years later, I would put his vocal style in the same high class as Howard Jones and Cy Curnin of The Fixx.  They also had one of the coolest band logos.

It was pretty cool seeing them on the TV performing with Madonna at Live Aid.  What I didn’t know was that it was the beginning of the end for the trio I knew and loved as Thompson Twins.

madonna n tom live aid

After Joe Leeway left the Twins in 1986, Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie kept the band and the name going until 1993, when they changed it to Babble, reflecting a change in musical direction from New Wave to “dub-influenced chill-out” (mixing Electronica, World Beat, Alt-Dance and Club styles).

Babble’s second and final album, 1996’s ETHER.

As Babble, Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie (who were married at the time and living in New Zealand) released a couple of albums before calling it quits in 1996.  Alannah Currie retired from music, and they were divorced in 2003 (though they remain friends).

Tom Bailey now lives in London with his second wife, he took part in the 2014 version of the Retro Futura Tour as “Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey” and earlier this year on “The ‘80s Cruise,” an annual event of which I hope to attend at some point.  Under the moniker of “Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey,” he released a single last year called “Come So Far,” and has another one scheduled for release this year.

When I think of Thompson Twins, the first songs that come to mind are “Lay Your Hands On Me,” “Hold Me Now,” “If You Were Here” (from SIXTEEN CANDLES), “Sugar Daddy,” “In The Name Of Love” (both the 1982 and 1988 versions), their kick-ass cover of The Beatles’ “Revolution,” “Doctor! Doctor!” and “Love On Your Side,” but it was all “Lies” that made me fall in love with those three non-related kids back in 1982, who were, at one time, Twins…

xmas song of the day – “December Will Be Magic Again” | KATE BUSH | 1979 / 1980.

Happy Holidays!  Since it’s the first year of my blog, and since it’s the last year for my Annual Holiday Show on my little 20-year-old 80s radio program, STUCK IN THE 80s (on WMPG community radio in Portland, Maine), I wanted to present to you THE 31 DAYS OF 80s XMAS SONGS, or, 31 of my favorite 80s holiday musical treats.

stuck-holiday-show-promo-art

kate_bush_-_before_the_dawn_albumThe song for Day 9 of the 31 DAYS OF 80s XMAS SONGS is by one of my all-time favorite recording artists, who is on track to picking up her first No. 1 album in her U.K. homeland in almost 30 years – the lovely Kate Bush.

On 11.25.2016, Kate Bush released a three-disc live recording called BEFORE THE DAWN, encompassing a series of acclaimed live shows she performed in London in 2014.  If it reaches No. 1 on the U.K. album chart, it will be her first chart-topping album since 1988’s THE WHOLE STORY hits compilation, which was certified 4x platinum there.

By Xmas 1980, a then-22-year-old Kate Bush already had three Top 10 U.K. albums to her credit, including her No. 1 U.K. album from that year, NEVER FOR EVER.  In between NEVER FOR EVER and her fourth album, 1982’s THE DREAMING, Kate released a 5-minute holiday single (as many recording artists in the U.K. strive to do), “December Will Be Magic Again.”

Originally recorded in 1979 at Abbey Road Studio 2 London, “December Will Be Magic Again” was released for the Xmas holiday in mid-November 1980.  It prolly would have charted higher than No. 29 on the U.K. singles chart had it been released closer to Xmas, but regardless of its chart peak, it remains a holiday staple.  It also reached No. 13 in Ireland.

its-xmasAnother version of “December Will Be Magic Again” exists, a different mix from around the same time that features slide whistles, and congas played by Kate’s drummer, Preston Heyman.  The closet version to this was performed live on Kate’s 1979 Xmas special (the video link is below).  Both versions have found their way to appear on several holiday compilations.  While I am a fan of both versions, I prefer the shorter version with the congas, because that’s the first version I heard (on a 1989 U.K. Xmas compilation called IT’S CHRISTMAS), and it’s the first version I fell in love with.

Whichever version you choose to enjoy this time of year, and wherever you choose to enjoy your holiday season, this song indeed reminds you that December WILL be magic again, or at the very least, it’s a good idea…

song of the day – “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” | KATE BUSH | 1985.

On the day I graduated from high school in June 1985, if you had asked me who Kate Bush was, I wouldn’t have had any friggin’ idea.  Thankfully, that all changed a few months later when I heard “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” (from her brilliant 1985 album, HOUNDS OF LOVE).

By 1985, England’s Kate Bush had been releasing music since 1978, when, at the age of 19, her first album, THE KICK INSIDE, went Platinum and her first single, “Wuthering Heights,” spent four weeks at No. 1 in the U.K. (Kate was the first female recording artist to reach No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart with a self-written song). wuthering-heights

“Wuthering Heights” was based on the last 10 minutes of the 1967 BBC miniseries, which was based on the 1847 novel by Emily Brontë (who Kate Bush shares a birthday with – July 30th).  Kate was discovered by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour in the mid-70s, when she was just 16, and helped her record her demo tapes (and paid for them).  EMI Records suggested Kate wait until she was 19 to release her first album, and the wait proved to be a smart move.  Though not a success here in America (she sadly never really was), THE KICK INSIDE and “Wuthering Heights” were both huge global hits.  Even Pat Benatar covered “Wuthering Heights” on her second album, 1980’s CRIMES OF PASSION.

hounds-of-love

Fast forward to September 1985, and 27-year-old Kate Bush had released her fifth album, the masterpiece HOUNDS OF LOVE.  The acclaim for the album was almost universal, and here in the U.S., it became her highest-charting album, reaching No. 30 on BILLBOARD’s album chart.  The original ROLLING STONE review for HOUNDS OF LOVE wasn’t impressive (“There’s no arguing that Bush is extraordinarily talented, but as with Jonathan Richman, rock’s other eternal kid, her vision will seem silly to those who believe children should be seen and not heard.”  Ouch on both accounts; both Kate and Jonathan are awesome!!).  However, THE ROLLING STONE ALBUM GUIDE later reversed that review, giving HOUNDS OF LOVE four out of five stars.

The first single from HOUNDS OF LOVE, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” was released in early August 1985, more than a month before the album was released.  EMI was reluctant to release a single with the use of “God” in the title, and wanted to release another song from the album, “Cloudbusting,” as the first single.

EMI (and others along the way) misinterpreted the lyrics to the song, and why Kate named it the way she did.  As she explained in a 1992 interview, “I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman can’t understand each other because we are a man and a woman.  And if we could actually swap each other’s roles, if we could actually be in each other’s place for a while, I think we’d both be very surprised!  [she laughs]

“And I think it would lead to a greater understanding.  And really the only way I could think it could be done was either… you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know.  And I thought, ‘well, no, why not a deal with God!’  You know, because in a way it’s so much more powerful the whole idea of asking God to make a deal with you.  You see, for me it is still called ‘Deal With God,’ that was its title.  But we were told that if we kept this title that it would not be played in any of the religious countries, Italy wouldn’t play it, France wouldn’t play it, and Australia wouldn’t play it!  Ireland wouldn’t play it, and that generally we might get it blacked purely because it had God in the title.”

But, Kate was persistent and persuaded the suits at EMI to release “Running Up That Hill” as the first single, since it was the first song written for the album.  So, there was a compromise – on HOUNDS OF LOVE, the song’s title is listed in full as “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” and the single is just listed as “Running Up That Hill.”

The response in Kate’s U.K. homeland for “Running Up That Hill” was positive and immediate, and it debuted all the way up at No. 9 on the U.K. singles chart, on its way to a No. 3 peak, her second-highest charting U.K. hit, and her biggest U.K. hit released during the 80s.

“Running Up That Hill” was a global success as well, reaching the Top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland, the Top 20 in Canada, and the Top 30 in Austria, France and New Zealand.

Over here in the U.S., “Running Up That Hill” debuted on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 in early September 1985 at No. 95, and on this date in 1985 (10.19), it was still climbing the Hot 100.  It reached the Top 40 two months after its Hot 100 debut, on its way to a No. 30 peak (like parent album, HOUNDS OF LOVE) in late November 1985, and would stay on the chart until mid-January 1986.  It stayed on the Hot 100 for a total of 20 weeks, which is a longer chart stay than some songs that went to No. 1.

running-up-that-hill

“Running Up That Hill” was also one of those rare hits that appealed to both Dance and Rock fans, and reached No. 13 on BILLBOARD’s Dance chart and No. 34 on BILLBOARD’s Mainstream Rock chart.

placebo-running-upThe wonderful legacy of “Running Up That Hill” has continued for more than 30 years, and has been covered numerous times, including a 2003 cover by a Dutch Symphonic Metal band, Within Temptation, but my favorite cover version has to be the 2003 version by the London Alt-Rock band, Placebo.  It’s one of the best 80s covers I’ve ever heard.  In 2006, Placebo’s downbeat version was described by Q magazine as “sound[ing] more like a pact with the Devil’ than the original ‘deal with God’.”  I love that.  That version has also appeared on several TV shows and films.

When EMI Records celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1997, HOUNDS OF LOVE was featured as part of their “EMI First Centenary” series, replete with B-sides and remixes.  I was so excited to find this shortly after its release, and, it’s a disc I treasure dearly to this day.  In fact, HOUNDS OF LOVE is one of my all-time favorite albums of any decade.  And, from the first time I heard “Running Up That Hill,” I can safely say there’s been a thunder in my heart for Kate Bush ever since…

song of the day – “Love And Anger” | KATE BUSH | 1989 / 1990.

Four years and a month passed between the release of Kate Bush’s 1985 masterpiece, HOUNDS OF LOVE, and the wonderful 1989 follow-up album, THE SENSUAL WORLD, but it was as if Kate Bush hadn’t been away at all.  The album, produced by Kate, was recorded over a two-year period, and featured gems like the title track (originally inspired by James Joyce’s ULYSSES), “Deeper Understanding” (one of three tracks on the album that features the Bulgarian vocal ensemble Trio Bulgarka) and “This Woman’s Work” (originally featured in a pivotal scene in the 1988 John Hughes film, SHE’S HAVING A BABY).

the sensual world

“Love And Anger” was the third single released around the world, but was the only single from the album released in America (more on that in a moment).  From a 2011 CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND re-review of THE SENSUAL WORLD, they stated that “Love And Anger” was written over a period of 18 months, and Kate Bush described the song as one of the most difficult songs to put together, though it was one of the first songs written for the album.

Kate Bush played many of the instruments on the album, but on “Love And Anger,” the incredible guitar work is courtesy of the musician who discovered Kate in the mid-70s, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour (who also appears in the Kate Bush-directed video).

love and anger

“Love And Anger” was officially released in February 1990 and reached No. 38 on the U.K. singles chart, and spent three weeks at No. 1 in December 1989 on BILLBOARD’s then-young Modern Rock chart, the only time Kate would have a No. 1 on any chart in America.

In a situation that still puzzles me today, Kate’s longtime label, EMI, and especially her U.S. label, EMI America, somehow “forgot” to renew Kate’s contract.  Really?!  Well, EMI America’s loss was Columbia Records’ gain, and they released THE SENSUAL WORLD, but it was released in the U.S. after the first two singles from the album had already been released.  It was also the only Kate Bush album to be certified Gold here in the U.S., selling even more than HOUNDS OF LOVE, and it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. the kate inside

On September 13, 2016, Italian photographer Guido Harari (who photographed Kate Bush for 11 years) has an exhibit opening at London’s Art Bermondsey Project Space, coinciding with the limited-edition book release of THE KATE INSIDE: PHOTOGRAPHED BY GUIDO HARARI.

Kate released her last album, 2011’s 50 WORDS FOR SNOW, and in 2014, she performed 22 shows at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.  The tickets sold out in 15 minutes, and at one point, in antici-PA-tion for the shows, she charted eight albums in the Top 40 of the U.K. Albums chart, which placed her third behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley.  Pretty impressive, but not surprising, considering the love people in the U.K. and beyond have for Kate Bush.  My love for Kate and her music has grown so much over the years, and continues to grow, as does my love (sans anger) for this glorious gem…

niagara falls

Niagara Falls lit up in purple, in honor of Prince…

It’s been 5 hours and 6 whole days… since I heard the news that shocked and saddened the entire planet – Prince was gone.

I was at work in Central Maine on the afternoon of Thursday, April 21, 2016, and a couple of hours away from heading 2 the Portland, Maine area 2 see Colin Hay perform.  A co-worker walked over 2 my cubie and said, “Prince died.”  I said, “That’s not funny.”  He wasn’t kidding.  And, a minute later, I confirmed it on the Interweb.  I felt bad 4 not believing him, but then again, I’m still in a bit of denial about the whole thing, even though I know he’s really gone.

After the New Year, I had reset my 5th Generation iPod (the last one with the wheel), and since then, I had only put a handful of Prince songs back on there, and that’s all I had with me the day he died.

colin hay 4.21.16

Colin Hay, live at the Westbrook (Maine) Performing Arts Center, 4.21.2016.

That afternoon, on my hour-plus drive 2 see Colin Hay at the Westbrook (Maine) Performing Arts Center just outside of Portland, I was going up and down the radio dial 2 see if any radio stations were playing Prince.  I heard “Raspberry Beret” twice, “When Doves Cry” a few times, and “Let’s Go Crazy” too.  The afternoon DJ at the “younger” station of the 2 Classic Rock stations in Portland talked about how the Portland NBC station had been there 2 talk about Prince, but did he play a Prince song after that?  No!  He went into a Boston song.  Really?  They try coming across as hip when they’re anything but…  Effing commercial radio.  As 4 the “older” of the 2 Classic Rock stations in Portland – I didn’t hear any Prince at all.

eiffel tower

The Eiffel Tower in Paris, lit up for Prince, 4.21.2016.

I even scanned the AM band 4 a bit, and came across this AM talk station (not sure where it’s out of), but they were talking about Prince, and how he wasn’t Little Richard or this person or that person.  C’mon!  You can’t compare Prince 2 anybody, especially on the day he died.  Show some respect already!  Nothing compares 2 Prince.  Yet one more reason I don’t listen 2 talk radio.  Effing blowhards.  Did Prince have the most No. 1 songs or the most singles ever?  No.  What he did have was a sensational gift 4 music, and he shared that music, and is prolly the only one who could have gotten away with writing about love, sex and God – all in the same song.  And there were many of those songs…

Colin Hay put on another amazing show hour after learning Prince died, and even did a little bit of “Little Red Corvette” for Prince, and for those in attendance.  He said it was a “weird day,” and it was, and it still is, but seeing Colin perform that night helped get me through the day…

princePrince’s first album, FOR YOU, was released in April 1978, but I didn’t learn about Prince until the next year, the year I started getting into music – 1979 (my first blog post is about that very subject).  From his self-titled second album, “I Wanna Be Your Lover” debuted on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 the week of Thanksgiving 1979.

I know I’ve said this before, but one of the things I loved most about listening 2 Casey Kasem and AMERICAN TOP 40 was the music trivia.  I’ve even incorporated it into my STUCK IN THE 80s radio shows on WMPG-FM and WMPG.org.  One of the first things I learned about “I Wanna Be Your Lover” is that Prince was just 21 when he released that song, and did everything on that song (and the PRINCE album too) – everything was written, arranged, composed, produced and performed by Prince.  I didn’t know of anyone else who did that.  And he was just 21 and recorded the album in 2 weeks!  Damn.

Well, it impressed me enough 2 buy the single (and later, the album too), and “I Wanna Be Your Lover” stopped at a respectable No. 11 for 2 weeks in January / February 1980 (and spent 2 weeks at No. 1 on BILLBOARD’s R&B chart).

cyndi when u were mine japanSince I was listening 2 (mostly) Top 40 radio in the early 80s, Prince’s next 2 albums, DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY, weren’t even on my radar until several years later.  In fact, it was Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 album, SHE’S SO UNUSUAL, that introduced me 2 Prince’s song, “When You Were Mine” (originally from his 1980 album, DIRTY MIND).  I would see Cyndi perform that song as part of the 30th Anniversary tour for SHE’S SO UNUSUAL back in October 2013.  It was a dream come true.  I am seeing Cyndi perform songs from her first Country album, DETOUR, in May 2016.  I am hoping she’ll play “When You Were Mine” in honor of Prince.

1999 albumPrince’s music returned 2 my life with the 1982 album, 1999.  The video 4 the first single, “Little Red Corvette,” was a groundbreaking video, as it was one of the first videos on MTV 2 feature an black recording artist (along with Michael Jackson).  I have 2 confess, when “Little Red Corvette” was climbing the charts (to a No. 6 peak on the Hot 100, his first Top 10 hit), I was not a big fan of the song.  It was okay, but I wasn’t digging it as much as I would later in life.  But I did buy the 2-album set (I think it was the first 2-album, non-hits collection set I ever knew about, and thought it was cool that someone was releasing a double album just 4 the sake of releasing a double album).

chevy prince tribute

A very classy tribute from Chevrolet in honor of Prince, quoting a line from “Little Red Corvette…”

The single 4 the Cold War Classic “1999” might have been the reason I purchased  1999 the album.  Loved loved loved that song.  Took me years 2 learn what it was really about; not the kind of party song I took it for in my youth.  “1999” was actually the leadoff single 4 the album, but it stopped at No. 44 on the Hot 100 for a quick couple of weeks at the end of 1982.

1999 singleWith “Little Red Corvette” still in the Top 10 in early June 1983, “1999” re-entered the Hot 100 at No. 70, and 2 weeks later, quickly landed in the Top 40.  “1999” was on its way 2 the Top 10, when it got held up at No. 12 for 2 weeks in late July 1983.  But that’s not the end of the story for “1999.”

In late 1998, just before the year the song is named for, “1999” was re-issued a third time, and it even landed at No. 40 on the Hot 100 for one week.  I was in Washington, D.C. 4 New Year’s 1999, and it was amazing 2 hear that the song and the album, 1999, were all sold out everywhere.

For New Year’s Eve, I was at a big venue 4 a big D.C. New Year’s party, and when they played “1999” as the song turned into the actual year, I admit I was caught up in it.  It’s funny, though, because “1999” the song is not about 1999 at all.  It’s about the Cold War (very much happening in 1982), and was about Prince expressing himself and his fears of of nuclear war.  So, “1999” the song was actually about 1999 turning into the year 2000, and 2 enjoy it, because by 2000, we most likely wouldn’t be around (“Party over, oops, out of time…”).

delirious1999’s third (proper) single was the short but fun “Delirious,” which spent a month at No. 8 in October / November 1983.  1999 was the album that made Prince a star.  But it was his next album that would turn him into a superstar…

1984’s PURPLE RAIN was a massive album, not just 4 that year, but 4 any year.  PURPLE RAIN gave Prince the biggest album of the year (No. 1 for 24 weeks; no other recording artist has matched that feat until Adele’s 21 album did this decade).  The album generated 5 Top 40 hits, including 4 Top 10 hits, and two of those were No. 1 songs, “Let’s Go Crazy” (2 weeks, September / October 1984) and the biggest single of the year (“When Doves Cry,” 5 weeks, July / August 1984).

purple rain

PURPLE RAIN also garnered Prince 2 Grammy Awards and gave him the last-ever Academy Award handed out 4 Best Song Score.  PURPLE RAIN has gone on 2 become not only one of THE biggest soundtracks ever recorded, but one of THE biggest albums of all-time, selling over 13 million copies in the U.S. alone.  On a ROLLING STONE magazine list of the Top 25 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time, PURPLE RAIN was ranked at No. 2, behind The Beatles’ “Help.”

purple rain poster

Upon hearing the news of Prince’s passing on Thursday, 4.21.2016, I don’t know why, but I had this sudden urge 2 hear “The Beautiful Ones,” the third of 9 songs on the album.  2 be honest, it was one of the songs I tended 2 skip over back in 1984, but today, I love it’s soulfulness, it’s beauty, and it’s love for, well, love.  I was good 2 play it on the show again 4 the first time since my 25th Anniversary Tribute show to PURPLE RAIN back in 2009.

There was no question in anyone’s mind that Prince loved making music.  Save for 1983 (unless U count the 2 albums for 1999) and 1993, Prince released an album every year between his 1978 debut through his last album 4 Warner Bros., CHAOS AND DISORDER, in 1996.

around the world full LP cover

The full album cover for 1985’s AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY.

I loved the hits from 1985’s AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (“Raspberry Beret,” No. 2; “Pop Life,” No. 7), and even once played the full 22-minute remix of “America” (which just missed the Top 40, No. 46) on an Independence Day show on STUCK IN THE 80s.prince parade

Like AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY, I enjoyed his hits from PARADE (songs from UNDER THE CHERRY MOON), notably his No. 1 song, “Kiss” (2 weeks at No. 1, April 1986) and the underrated follow-up single, “Mountains” (No. 23), which many folks have forgotten about I’m sure, but not me.  It was nice 2 actually get a request 4 this on my first of 2 Prince tributes this past Sunday night (4.24.2016).

As much as I adore PURPLE RAIN, it was Prince’s 1987 album, SIGN “O” THE TIMES, though, that ended up being my favorite Prince album of all-time.  SIGN “O” THE TIMES was another double album, which I again thought was pretty cool, and it a lot more depth and encompassed many genres – like Funk, Soul, Pop, Rock – than any other album I had ever heard from him.

sign o the times

The cover art for Prince’s SIGN “O” THE TIMES…

The title track from SIGN “O” THE TIMES was the album’s first single, and right away, Prince was in groundbreaking mode again.  Infused in this classy Funk Pop song were lyrics about serious life issues concerning gang violence, drug abuse, the Challenger disaster, nuclear war and as much as he could include in 5 minutes.sign o the times single

Prince was not a fan of President Ronald Reagan, and was mentioned in Prince’s Cold War Classic “Ronnie, Talk To Russia” (from CONTROVERSY), and though Reagan knew about AIDS as early as the first year of his Presidency (1981), he was reluctant 2 talk about it for years.  “Sign ‘O’ The Times” was one of the first songs ever 2 mention AIDS, I think, in part, because Reagan wouldn’t.  “Sign ‘O’ The Times” was the first of 3 Top 10 hits from the album 4 Prince, and reached No. 3 in April 1987.

if i was your girlfriendThe second single released from SIGN “O” THE TIMES was an interesting but bold choice, “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”  The song is told in a male perspective 2 a woman, or, would his girlfriend open up 2 him more if he was a female friend rather than her boyfriend.  TROUSER PRESS magazine said the song was one of the highlights on SIGN “O” THE TIMES, stating that the song “redefines a relationship in a surprisingly mature way.”  Though the song was a Top 20 U.K. hit, it was a little too intimate 4 U.S. radio, and it stopped at No. 67 (Keep in mind this was the same year that some U.S. radio stations wouldn’t even air the word “Sex” in George Michael’s “I Want Your Sex,” if they even aired the song at all.).

u got the look“U Got The Look” was the album’s third single, and with the help of Sheena Easton, it became the biggest single from the album, reaching No. 2 in October 1987.  The fourth and final single released from SIGN “O” THE TIMES was “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man,” which hit No. 10 in February 1988.  80s Alt-Rockers Flesh For Lulu and Sigue Sigue Sputnik have covered the song, as well as other bands like The Goo Goo Dolls and My Morning Jacket.  The song’s B-side, “Hot Thing,” wasn’t marketed as its own single, but got enough airplay 2 reach the Hot 100 on its own, peaking at No. 63.

I think all of SIGN “O” THE TIMES is brilliant, but some other songs from the album that stand out 4 me are the lovely “Starfish And Coffee,” the funky “Housequake” (“Shut up already! Damn.”), the epic 9-minute jam, “It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night,” and, the stirring, guitar-driven “The Cross,” which I think would have been an excellent choice 4 a single, but that’s me.lovesexy

Though I really didn’t get into Prince’s 1988 album, LOVESEXY, I did (and still do) enjoy “Alphabet St.” (No. 8) and “When 2 R In Love,” a ballad that was originally on 1987’s THE BLACK ALBUM, which was pulled so that the more radio-friendly LOVESEXY could be released instead (THE BLACK ALBUM remained a bootleg 4 many years, before finally getting a proper release in 1994; my favorite track on THE BLACK ALBUM, “Bob George,” prolly has more “motherfuckers” in it than the first DIE HARD movie).

batman

Fast forward to 1989.  BATMAN was the biggest film of the year.  In fact, at the time, its $251 million dollar gross 4 the movie starring Jack Nicholson as the Joker and Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader (still my favorite Batman)  made it the fifth-biggest film of all-time, behind JAWS, RETURN OF THE JEDI, STAR WARS and E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (nearly 30 years later, it’s ranked at No. 95 for all-time).  Prince had something 2 do with that success, as he was rightfully chosen 2 do the soundtrack. batdance

First single “Batdance” quickly became Prince’s fourth No. 1 song (August 1989), and the soundtrack spent 6 weeks at No. 1 on the BILLBOARD album chart.  Other Top 40 singles from the soundtrack included “Partyman” (No. 18) and another collaboration with Sheena Easton, the ballad “The Arms Of Orion” (No. 36).  Another single, “Scandalous!” was a Top 5 hit on the BILLBOARD R&B chart.  At a time where many cars came with cassette players in them, I played the hell out of the cassette version of this album.  One of my all-time favorite Prince albums, even if most people don’t even remember “Batdance.”

With the advent of the 1990s, I started 2 lose touch with Prince’s music, though it wasn’t all lost – I loved 2 songs from 1990’s PURPLE RAIN sequel, GRAFFITI BRIDGE: “Thieves In The Temple” (No. 6), and, a song he wrote, produced and sang backup vocals on for 13-year-old newcomer Tevin Campbell, “Round And Round” (No. 12). diamonds and pearls

I also loved the Top 40 singles from 1991’s DIAMONDS AND PEARLS album: “Gett Off” (No. 21), “Cream” (No. 1, 2 weeks, November 1991), the gorgeous “Diamonds And Pearls” (featuring Rosie Gaines; No. 3, February 1992), and the severely underrated “Money Don’t Matter 2 Night” (No. 23).

1992’s LOVE SYMBOL ALBUM would be the last studio album 4 Prince released on Warner Bros. 2 go Platinum.  It gave us the gems “Sexy MF” (No. 66), “My Name Is Prince” (No. 36), “The Morning Papers” (No. 44), and, “7,” whose peak position gave chart nerds like me something 2 get extra nerdy about – it peaked at No. 7 in February 1993.love symbol album

After the LOVE SYMBOL ALBUM, much of my interest in the rest of Prince’s 90s work and beyond, much like that of the wonderful David Bowie, had waned.  I did, however, enjoy some of Prince’s later work, starting with “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World” (3 weeks at No. 3, April / May 1994; to date his last Top 10 U.S. hit).

I also enjoyed his cover of The Stylistics’ No. 3 1972 hit, “Betcha By Golly Wow!” (from his first album after leaving Warner Bros., a 1996 3-CD set appropriately titled EMANCIPATION).  Apparently, Prince had always wanted 2 do a cover of this song, but Warner Bros. never allowed him 2 do it.  Once he was out of his Warner Bros. contract, it gave him the freedom 2 not just do that cover song on EMANCIPATION, but covers of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make U Love Me,” “The Delfonics’ “La, La, La Means I Love You” and Joan Osborne’s 1995 hit, “One Of Us” (written by The Hooters’ Eric Bazilian). emancipation

In 1999, Warner Bros. released THE VAULT: OLD FRIENDS FOR SALE, an album submitted by Prince three years earlier, with songs recorded between 1985 and 1994.  It was the last album of his Warner Bros. contract, and it appears that they wanted 2 get a jump on Prince’s actual new album that year, RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC, with a fantastic cover of Sheryl Crow’s “Every Day Is A Winding Road.”  The strategy of Warner Bros. did not work.  RAVE not only charted higher (No. 18 vs. No. 85 for VAULT), but it was certified Gold.

musicologyIn January 2001, I became the Music Director 4 WMPG, originally a volunteer position that turned into a University of Southern Maine job 3 1/2 years later.  It was the best job I ever had, something that was truly tailored 4 me.  In that time, at least 3 of his albums that decade were released to college radio – 2004’s MUSICOLOGY, his first double-platinum album since 1991’s DIAMONDS AND PEARLS.  A great deal of the success of this album came with Prince’s brilliant idea 2 include a copy of the album with tickets 2 his concerts, a feature that has become more commonplace today with many artists (my tickets 2 Duran Duran included copies of the new album).

3121The 2006 album 3121 brought Prince back 2 the top of the BILLBOARD Album chart, and included the funky “Black Sweat” and beautiful “Te Amo Corazón,” a No. 7 hit in Italy.  His 2007 album, PLANET EARTH featured my favorite on the album, “Guitar,” which was a favorite in Japan as well, reaching the Top 10 there.  After PLANET EARTH, Prince left my music radar again until last year’s brilliant and poignant protest song “Baltimore.”

“Baltimore” was initially a digital-only single eventually released on Prince’s HITnRUN PHASE TWO album earlier this year, and was in response 2 the fatal police shooting of Freddie Gray in Baltimore in April 2015.  Six Baltimore police officers were charged in the death of Freddie Gray.  I think “Baltimore” is one of THE best songs Prince ever did.  He even did a Rally 4 Peace concert in Baltimore on Mother’s Day 2015.  I hope those who didn’t know the song “Baltimore” existed while Prince was still alive will discover it now.

One of the things I loved about Prince was that he fought hard 2 put out the music he wanted 2 put out, even if it always didn’t work out with his record label.  Prince was unwavered as he was at the top of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC)’s 1985 list of the “Filthy Fifteen,” a list of songs (mostly Pop and Metal songs) the group, co-founded by Tipper Gore, found “objectionable.” parental advisory

This is the group that gave us those “parental advisory” stickers on CDs and albums that everyone loves so much, and is pretty much irrelevant today.  I’m sure such a group couldn’t keep up with all the “filthy” lyrics in today’s music.  Prince’s “Darling Nikki” and “Sugar Walls,” the song he wrote 4 birthday girl Sheena Easton under pseudonym “Alexander Nevermind”) topped the list.  (4 some reason, Tipper Gore must have skipped over his song, “Erotic City.”  Or maybe, she really liked it and that’s why it wasn’t on the list.)  Madonna’s “Dress You Up” and Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop” were on the list as well.

a love bizarrePrince was so incredibly talented, a truly gifted musician, singer, songwriter and actor who never forgot where he came from.  He was also very generous.  He contributed countless dollars 2 charities in the Minneapolis, MN area (where he lived his entire life), he gave parties at his Paisley Park estate (on the conditions of no smoking, no drinking and no swearing), and he wrote many songs that ended up being hits 4 other recording artists, like “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O’Connor, “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre” 4 Sheila E., “Jungle Love” by The Time, “I Feel For You” by Chaka Khan (originally from his self-titled second album), the aforementioned “Sugar Walls” by Sheena Easton, and “Manic Monday” by The Bangles (under the pseudonym “Christopher”), which was ranked at No. 2 behind his own “Kiss” at No. 1 in 1986.

AON tom jones kissSpeaking of “Kiss,” two great cover versions of that song were released – in 1986 by U.K. Alt-Rock band Age Of Chance, and the only American Top 40 hit 4 The Art Of Noise out of London featuring the pride of Wales, Tom Jones.  It spent 2 weeks at No. 31 on the Hot 100 in January 1989, reached No. 1 in New Zealand and Spain, and the Top 10 in 8 countries, including the U.K.

It’s funny – I’d like 2 think I know a lot about 80s music, but it’s kinda cool 2 learn something new, even after more than 25 years since the end of the decade.  After Prince died, all of these stories surfaced throughout the Internet about him, including lists of the songs he wrote that were hits for other artists.  One of these songs was the Top 5 1983 Stevie Nicks hit, “Stand Back.”  Stevie Nicks wrote the song, but according a ROLLING STONE piece, she says the song “belongs to Prince.”

stand backIt was the day of her wedding, and on the way to her honeymoon, she heard “Little Red Corvette” for the first time.  Humming along 2 Prince’s song, Stevie Nicks wrote all of “Stand Back” that day.  The day she was 2 record “Stand Back,” Stevie Nicks called Prince 2 tell him the story of how the song came about.  Less than a half hour later, Prince showed up at her studio, and “walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about 25 minutes and then left.  He spoiled me for every band I’ve ever had because nobody can exactly recreate – not even with two piano players – what Prince did all by his little self.”

One of the many things I admired about Prince is that he did extended remixes of his B-sides, like “Erotic City” (the B-side of “Let’s Go Crazy”) and “La, La, La, He, He, Hee” (the B-side of “Sign ‘O’ The Times”).  I can’t think of anyone else who did that!

prince gold purple rain award4 a short time in late 2005 and early 2006, I owned a copy of an authentic Recording Association Industry Association of America (RIAA) Gold record 4 PURPLE RAIN.  I had just quit a longtime job in Portland, cashed out my 401K (which I don’t recommend) at the end of the year (which I especially don’t recommend), and it was an impulse purchase while i was inbetween jobs.  But, when I couldn’t find another job right away, I  needed the money, and basically got my money back.  I don’t even have a picture of it, though the small picture included here is what it would have looked like.  Now some people online are selling their gold records similar 2 this 4 thousands of dollars.  Greedy bastards.

4 U prince tributes 2016

I’m doing 2 tribute shows 2 Prince (called 4 U).  The first tribute show aired this past Sunday (4.24.2016) and it was weird, mainly in the sense that I was constantly getting choked up and jamming 2 the music at the same time.  Never had a feeling like that before, not even with David Bowie.  But, the show was well-received, a lot of people tuned in and contributed.  Some folks commented on how I played songs they hadn’t heard of before (prolly like “Baltimore” and “4 The Tears In Your Eyes,” a song that originally appeared on the WE ARE THE WORLD album in 1985).  There was even a Prince song I had forgotten about that was requested by a listener – “Good Love,” from the 1988 soundtrack 2 the Michael J. Fox film, BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY.

The Empire State Building lit up in Purple for Prince…

This week, the outpouring 4 Prince’s music has been phenomenal.  With just a half-day of tracking 4 the charts, Prince is now at No. 1 with the 2001 compilation, THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE, and No. 2 with PURPLE RAIN.

And, six of his Top 40 gems are back on the Hot 100, led by “Purple Rain” at No. 17.  With just that half a day of tracking, I’m betting he’ll have an even bigger week next week.  I always thought that Prince’s signature song, “Purple Rain,” should have reigned at No. 1 in late 1984, but was denied the top spot by Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”  Wouldn’t it be something if “Purple Rain” could be his last No. 1 song?  At the very least, it was the No. 1-selling song of last week, which is pretty impressive 4 a 1984 song in a 21st-century digital world…

On the day Prince died, my dear and über-talented friend, Hope, put out a short but fitting post on her amazing blog, HEXBREAKER (hexbreaker9.wordpress.com), which included a cool quote from Eric Clapton I never knew existed until her post: When asked what it feels like to be the best guitarist alive, Eric Clapton said, “I don’t know. Ask Prince.”

purple rain single

A future No. 1 song in America, more than 30 years after its release?  Would be nice to have Prince’s signature song reach the top of the BILLBOARD Hot 100…

My goal was 2 have this blog post out over the past weekend.  When I started on Sunday, 4.24.2016, it had only been 0 hours and 3 days since Prince had passed away.  But, as it turned out, I had a lot 2 say; I couldn’t stop writing.  4 those folks who have been kind enough 2 read through 4,000+ words of my love 4 Prince, I thank U.  I’ll be back 2 regular posts soon, but I wanted 2 get this one 2 U first, and remember Prince in the best way I know how.

We’ve lost a lot of heavy hitters in the music world this year.  I had just gotten my David Bowie tattoo 8 days before Prince’s passing.  While I won’t get be getting a tattoo of Prince, or a “Little Red Corvette” anytime soon (budget won’t allow it), I’m betting my next car’s color will be purple.  Perhaps I’ll name her Nikki too.  Maybe Prince would have like that.

R.I.P. Prince and thank U, 4 your music, your generosity, your energy, and 4 standing up 4 what U believed in.  I believe at some point it’s going 2 finally hit me hard that U R gone, and when that happens, I’ll cry, I’ll say a couple prayers, and I’ll thank U again, 4 being a part of my life 4 all these years.  Peace and love 2 U, wherever you are.

P.S: Chevy was right – “Baby that was much too fast…”

song of the day – “Don’t Give Up” | PETER GABRIEL and KATE BUSH | 1986.

Throughout my adult life, there have been a handful of songs that I can rely on to lift my spirits or keep me going, when I thought life dealt me a bad hand or I was down and depressed for whatever reason.  One of those songs is “Don’t Give Up” by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

peter gabriel so“Don’t Give Up” appears on Peter’s 1986 breakthrough album, SO, was the second single released in the U.K., and the fifth one released here in America.  Despite 3 Top 40 hits on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 (including a No. 1 ranking for “Sledgehammer”), “Don’t Give Up” wasn’t well-received here, and stopped at No. 72.  Across the globe, it was a Top 10 hit in the U.K., Holland, Ireland and Australia.

There were two videos released for the song, but it was the first video – directed by Godley & Creme – that moves me to this day.  It’s a heartfelt 6-minute embrace between Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, with the sun going through a total eclipse in the background and comes back out again.  I loved the video so much, I bought the accompanying VHS tape with the videos to the songs on SO.  The Godley & Creme video for “Don’t Give Up” is one of my all-time favorite videos to this day. don't give up single

Many covers have been done over the years, including versions by Alicia Keys and Bono, Jody Watley, P!nk and John Legend, and a version by Willie Nelson and Sinéad O’Connor from 1993, which I’ve never heard but will now have to pick up ASAFP.

I’m sure everyone has their go-to songs when things aren’t going right, and I’m all for that.  I don’t know where I’d be now if music wasn’t such a big deal in my life, and it’s songs like “Don’t Give Up” that helped get me to where I am today – breathing, optimistic, happy to be living, excited to see what’s coming up next, thanks in no small part to these words…

Don’t give up / ‘cause you have friends

Don’t give up / you’re not the only one

Don’t give up / no reason to be ashamed

Don’t give up / you still have us

Don’t give up / we’re proud of who you are

Don’t give up / you know it’s never been easy

Don’t give up / ‘cause I believe there’s a place

There’s a place where we belong…
