stuck in the 80s 20 800x1000 YELLOWOver the course of the 20 years I’ve been on the air with my little 80s radio show, STUCK IN THE 80s (on WMPG-FM community radio in Portland, Maine), I’ve advocated for those many recording acts who had the one big hit in America and continue to be labeled as “one-hit wonders,” though they had more than one chart hit on the BILLBOARD Hot 100. 

There were nearly 500 artists during the Fall of 1979 through the end of 1989 who really did hit the Hot 100 only the one time.  I call them “(real) one-hit wonders of the 80s,” and I like to try and feature one every week on the blog. 

There are several recording artists remembered for the “one BIG hit” here in the U.S. who actually had more than one Top 40 hit on the Hot 100 and are STILL considered one-hit wonders (thanks to folks like VH1), including Eddy Grant, The Outfield, John Waite, Information Society (who had 2 Top 10 hits), General Public, Quarterflash, ’til Tuesday, Neneh Cherry (another artist with 2 Top 10 hits) and the Oslo, Norway band, a-ha.

Vocalist Morten Harket, keyboardist Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Pål Waaktaar-Savoy formed a-ha in 1982, and on their first album, 1985’s HUNTING HIGH AND LOW, and their second attempt at making the song “Take On Me” into a hit, their lives as they knew it would never be the same again.  “Take On Me” was a massive hit in Norway and beyond, reaching No. 1 in 10 countries worldwide (including the U.S.), and the Top 10 in another 8 countries, and parent album, HUNTING HIGH AND LOW, was a global hit as well.

I adore “Take On Me” and its sensational and creative video, and have for many years, but it was the follow-up single, “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.,” that made a-ha a part of my life for all-time.

“The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” was the third single overall released from HUNTING HIGH AND LOW, but the second single from the album released worldwide.  It made its way onto the BILLBOARD Hot 100 the end of November 1985 and debuted in the Top 40 in January 1986.  It climbed steadily until pausing at No. 20 for a week in late February 1986, and spent 17 weeks on the chart.  The trio would make one more appearance on the Hot 100, with 1986’s “Cry Wolf,” which reached No. 50.

Though I was disappointed in the Stateside chart performance of “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.,” I took comfort in the fact it was well-received around the world, reaching the Top 10 in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Holland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and the BILLBOARD Dance chart.  In Ireland and the U.K., where “Take On Me” had stopped at No. 2, “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” reached No. 1 in both of those countries, which was indeed validating, not only for the band, but also for my love of the song.

The video for “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” starts as a epilogue to the “Take On Me” video, where an animated Morten Harket realizes he can’t stay in the world of his young love interest, and heads back to the comic book world where he came from.  The video then turns into an impressive performance piece, set in a former English Gothic church (still owned by the Church of England), loaded with very interesting European mannequins (which are WAY different than your run-of-the-mill American mannequins).tsas_video

The editing of this video is magnificent.  Just setting up the hundreds of mannequins in the church as an orchestra, chorus, and patrons must have taken many hours if not days.  Also validating in my love for this song and its video is that, in a year where “Take On Me” won 6 MTV Video Music Awards, the video for “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” deservedly won the band 2 more: Best Editing and Best Cinematography.  It remains as one of my all-time favorite videos.

a-ha is still around today, and in their native Norway, every studio album they released between 1985 and 2005 reached No. 1 on the Norway album chart.  And, their most recent albums, 2009’s FOOT OF THE MOUNTAIN, and 2015’s CAST IN STEEL, reached No. 2. 

I know everyone has their own opinions on what or what not constitutes an artist being a one-hit wonder.  American radio stations, DJs and venues like VH1 have a stranglehold on which songs they think people should remember over others.  Luckily, WMPG is not one of those stations, and I sure as hell am not one of those DJs.  Yes, I realize there is a whole other world going on that has much more important issues than whether or not someone was a one-hit wonder.  But, in the world in which I live and breathe every day of my life – the 80s music world – a-ha is NOT a one-hit wonder.  And “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” is my proof…

song of the day – “True Colors” | CYNDI LAUPER | 1986.

Since the incomparable Cyndi Lauper is my favorite recording artist, she’s never really far from my mind (sorry Cyndi – I know you love to travel).  Such is the case today, as it’s only been a couple of nights since my dear and über-talented friend, Hope, and I saw Cyndi and Culture Club’s Boy George perform at Boston’s amazing Wang Theatre (or, if you prefer – which I don’t – the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre) on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

Cyndi is on tour to support her new album – and first Country album – DETOUR, which was released earlier this month.  The tour started, appropriately enough, in Nashville, where the album was recorded with the likes of Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill and Jewel.

DETOUR is Cyndi’s eleventh studio album, and also the first album (of many I hope!) with Sire Records, my favorite record label.  Cyndi had met with Sire President and co-founder (and Warner Bros. Vice-President) Seymour Stein about doing a covers album, and from that meeting came a conversation about the Golden Age of Country music.  And DETOUR was born.  This week, it’s the fourth-biggest Country album in America (and No. 1 on the U.K. Country albums chart).

The concert with Cyndi and Boy George was phenomenal, one of the best I’ve ever seen.  Cyndi intertwined songs from DETOUR with classics from SHE’S SO UNUSUAL (including her brilliant cover of Prince’s “When You Were Mine”), and other gems like “I Drove All Night” (from 1989’s A NIGHT TO REMEMBER) and one of my Cyndi favorites, “Fearless” (from 1996’s highly-underrated SISTERS OF AVALON album).

Cyndi did 12 songs before Boy George performed (I thought it was classy how she let him close out the show – and returned for a few songs with him later, including a moving cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” to close out the show).  She closed her performance with the always acoustic, always emotional “True Colors,” the title track of her second album from 1986. true colors LP

“True Colors” is one of Cyndi’s signature songs, but I forget it was actually written by songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly,  famous for writing songs that include Madonna’s “Like A Virgin,” The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame” and “In Your Room,” “Alone” by Heart, “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders, “I Touch Myself” by The Divinyls, and “I Drove All Night.”

Well, Cyndi may not have written the song, but she sure did run away with it and then some.  For 2 weeks around Halloween 1986, “True Colors” was No. 1 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100.  It was Cyndi’s second No. 1 single here and spent 20 weeks total on the chart. 

true colors singleFans showed their “True Colors” for the song around the globe, too.  It spent a week at No. 1 in Canada, and reached the Top 10 in Australia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden, and the Top 20 in the U.K., Austria, Germany, Holland and Switzerland.

For Cyndi Lauper, “True Colors” has long outlived its singles chart life and has long been a part of her own life, and the lives of many others.  In 2008, Cyndi co-founded the True Colors Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated solely for the purpose of educating people on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) issues and to work on ending homeless LGBT youth, and, as part of the True Colors Fund mission statement, “creating a world in which young people can be their true selves.”  For more information on the True Colors Fund, and ways to help and show your support, I encourage you find your way to truecolorsfund.org.

If my math is correct, Cyndi last performed in Maine during the TRUE COLORS tour, giving Portlanders and then some a sweet Christmas gift when she performed at the former Cumberland County Civic Center on December 17, 1986.  For some reason I can’t remember at this particular moment, I wasn’t able to go. 

As much as I’d love for Cyndi to return to the Maine (preferably, Portland’s wonderful Merrill Auditorium), and as much as I know many, many people here would love for her to return to the Pine Tree State, for now, I do what I can to attend her shows close to home, like Saturday night’s unforgettable Boston show, and where I can see Cyndi Lauper’s true colors (of which there are many) shining through and then some…

(real) one-hit wonder of the week – “I Wanna Be A Cowboy” | BOYS DON’T CRY | 1986.

Between late 1979 and the end of 1989, there were nearly 500 (real) one-hit wonders of the 80s that reached the BILLBOARD Hot 100 just one time, a list that includes Soft Cell, Gary Numan, Timbuk 3, The Church, Bronski Beat, Nik Kershaw, The Buggles, The Waitresses, Ultravox and two different bands named The Silencers.  Once a week, I’ll highlight a (real) one-hit wonder for you.

When you think of the words “boys don’t cry,” you prolly think of two things: the 1979 song by The Cure, and the band with the 1986 novelty hit, “I Wanna Be A Cowboy.”  Contrary to belief, the U.K. Pop / Rock band formed by Singer / Keyboardist Nick Richards in 1983 did not get the band’s name from The Cure classic, but actually from a line in the 1975 10cc Dream Pop gem, “I’m Not In Love” (“be quiet…big boys don’t cry, big boys don’t cry…”). 

The band Boys Don’t Cry had already released an EP before Paul Oakenfold discovered them.  In the mid-80s, well before he became a famed producer and DJ, Paul Oakenfold was a talent scout for Profile Records in London (the same label as Run-D.M.C.), and signed the band to Profile for their U.S. releases.

The self-titled album (and first full album) for Boys Don’t Cry was released in 1986, and from that album came a fun novelty single called “I Wanna Ba A Cowboy,” which has been described as the perfect musical realization of a spaghetti western movie.

“I Wanna Be A Cowboy” spurred its way onto the BILLBOARD Hot 100 chart in early April 1986, debuting at No. 90.  In mid-May, it had shot into the Top 40, and in late June, it spent a week at No. 12, and a total of 19 weeks on the Hot 100.  “I Wanna Be A Cowboy” would go on to reach the Top 10 in Australia and South Africa, most likely due in part to its kitschy video, which featured a cameo by the late, great Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead.

The follow-up single to “I Wanna Be A Cowboy” was called “Cities On Fire.”  This was a straight-up, Synth-driven Rock song, and I really enjoyed it (still do), but the novelty of Boys Don’t Cry was gone for most folks.  Though the band released another album, WHO THE AM DAM DO YOU THINK WE AM, and most recently, HEAR IT IS! (released in 2014), Boys Don’t Cry never graced the Hot 100 again.

It’s not an exaggeration that “I Wanna Be A Cowboy” is one of the most-requested songs on my little 20-year-old radio show, STUCK IN THE 80s.  It exudes the qualities of 80s music people most identify and love with the decade.  Who thought a song about a guy named Ted could be so much fun?  Can you believe that?

One more fun side note: knowing many people associated their name with the 1979 song of the same name by The Cure (and getting a kick out of it), Boys Don’t Cry included an instrumental song on their second album, titled…”The Cure.”

song of the day – “Human” | THE HUMAN LEAGUE | 1986.

In 1980, New Wave pioneer Gary Numan reached No. 9 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 singles chart here in the U.S., and finished the year at No. 12, besting eight songs that went all the way to No. 1 in the process.  And, though New Wave didn’t really make many waves here in the U.S. that year (apart from “Cars”), the New Wave onslaught was in definitely in place 2 years later, with the huge No. 1 hit by The Human League, “Don’t You Want Me.”don't you want me

For the next four years, New Wave was everywhere on the charts, blasting on the radio, selling in record stores, and airing on MTV – you couldn’t escape it, which was just fine with me. 

I’ve always contended that the New Wave craze in America started and ended with The Human League.  “Don’t You Want Me” started a 3-week run at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in July 1982, and their second and final U.S. No. 1 song, “Human,” spent a week on top in late November 1986.  I’m half-joking, but I’ve also long-contended the band that destroyed New Wave in the 80s is the band that succeeded “Human” at No. 1 on the Hot 100 – Bon Jovi and their hit, “You Give Love A Bad Name.”

NERDY TRIVIA NOTE: both The Human League and Def Leppard hail from Sheffield, England, both released albums titled HYSTERIA, which was the fourth album released for both bands, and each band had at least 5 members at the time the albums were released. 

crashFor their 1986 album, CRASH, The Human League met with famed Minneapolis producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who had just finished producing Janet Jackson’s CONTROL album).  The band flew out to Minneapolis to meet with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who were fans of the band) and everything seemed to go well at first, but apparently, in regards to the album, Jam and Lewis wanted to be the ones in control. 

Before the album was finished, the band flew back to Sheffield, and a couple of band members actually quit the band following the humiliating experience.  Human League frontman Philip Oakey had this to say about Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and issues with control:

“We like to be in control in the studio.  We don’t like giving that up to a producer.  That’s why we had a big, final argument, and we just decided to go home and leave them to finish it off.  It just got to the point of who had the power, and in that instance…  They were the men behind the mixing console, so they had ultimate control.”

And, at first, that lack of control for the band paid off.  One of three songs Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote for CRASH was “Human.”  It was released as the album’s first single, and within three weeks of release, it was already in the U.S. Top 40.  In less than 2 months, it was in the Top 10, and in late November 1986, it spent a week at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

On some of BILLBOARD’s other charts, “Human” Dance spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Dance chart, and reached No. 3 on the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts.  It was a global success as well, spending 3 weeks at No. 3 in Canada, and was a Top 10 in the U.K., Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

The follow-up single to “Human,” “I Need Your Loving” was chosen as CRASH’s second single (a decision that was made WITHOUT the band), and which sounds way more like The Time meets Janet Jackson rather than a single by The Human League.  It did not work.  The song failed to reach the Top 40 in both the U.S. and the U.K., and has since been pretty much disowned by the band.

The Human League have reached the Top 40 in their native homeland 16 times, led by “Don’t You Want Me” (the 23rd-biggest song in U.K. chart history).  Over here in the U.S., they’ve reached the Top 40 six times, most recently with a return to their Sythpop roots on 1990’s “Heart Like A Wheel” (No. 32) and 1995’s “Tell Me When” (No. 31).

I’m not a big fan of infidelity, but I am a fan of at least two songs about the subject – Billy Paul’s No. 1 hit from 1972, “Me And Mrs. Jones” and “Human” (“The tears I cry / Aren’t tears of pain / They’re only to hide my guilt and shame / I forgive you, and I ask the same of you / While we were apart, I was human too…”)

I know The Human League had their issues with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and the making of the album, CRASH, but at the very least, I’m so glad “Human” gave the band one more deserved No. 1 hit, and a song I’ll love forever.  And as for the crack at Bon Jovi earlier – well, what can I say?  I’m only human…

song of the day – “Breakout” | SWING OUT SISTER | 1987.

Here’s one of those songs that I absolutely did not like when it was originally released, but grew to enjoy and love.  Manchester, England is the birthplace to many great bands and artists like New Order, The Smiths, Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Buzzcocks, The Chameleons, Happy Mondays, The Outfield, Tim Booth, Electronic, The Stone Roses, David Gray, Oasis, Bee Gees, Simply Red and Joy Division.  Manchester, England is also the birthplace to the Brit-Pop band, Swing Out Sister (fashion designer-turned-vocalist Corinne Drewery, keyboardist Andy Connell, and at first, drummer Martin Jackson).

Swing Out Sister’s debut album, IT’S BETTER TO TRAVEL, was released this week in 1987, and was the band’s first of nine studio albums released through 2008.  And, from that album, was the band’s breakout song, titled appropriately enough, “Breakout.” 

Released in early October 1986, “Breakout” was a refreshing Brit-Pop treat with Jazz influences, unlike anything else on radio at that time.  A month later, “Breakout” reached its No. 4 peak in the U.K., but it took awhile longer for the single to break out here in the U.S., debuting on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 in mid-August 1987.

“Breakout” went on to spend two weeks at No. 6 on the Hot 100 in November 1987, a whole year after its peak on the U.K. singles chart.  “Breakout” stuck around through January 1988, nearly spending a half-year on the Hot 100, ending up as one of the biggest hits of 1987, and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group (Swing Out Sister was also nominated for Best New Artist).

Around the globe, “Breakout” also reached No. 4 in New Zealand, No. 6 in Ireland, the Top 20 in Australia, Belgium and Canada, and the Top 30 in Germany and Holland.

The follow-up single to “Breakout,” the lovely “Twilight World,” was already climbing the Hot 100 when “Breakout” was still on the chart, and peaked at No. 31 in late February 1988.  The band would make two more appearances on the Hot 100 – “Waiting Game” (No. 86, 1989) and “Am I The Same Girl” (No. 42, 1992). 

In 2014, Swing Out Sister started a crowdfunding project through PledgeMusic titled “A Moveable Feast,” saying, “We’re making a thing, don’t know what it is yet.  Come along for the ride and we’ll find out together.”  The result was the album, RUSHES, released in 2015, which was sent out to those who had pledged. 

Whenever I think of Swing Out Sister, I think of their charismatic style, with equal parts Pop and Jazz, and a hint of something I wasn’t hearing anywhere else.  “Twilight World” remains my favorite song by them, but I’ll never forget about their big “Breakout…”

Prolly the biggest band to come out of New Zealand was Split Enz, the Tim and Neil Finn-led Rock / New Wave band from Auckland.  Split Enz was formed in 1972.  Despite several lineup changes over the years, the band managed to release 9 albums between 1975 and 1984, and it was a song from the band’s fifth album, TRUE COLOURS, that brought Split Enz international attention outside of New Zealand and Australia – “I Got You.”

“I Got You” was released in January 1980, and instantly got rave reviews.  Back in 1980, Australian music magazine (or “music paper” as it was called), ROADRUNNER (not to be confused with today’s RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel magazine), said the song “positively drips with appeal that only philistines could fail to appreciate – it deserves to be a hit.”  The publication even encouraged readers to purchase a copy, as they were strongly convinced it was going to be big.  And they were right.  “I Got You” spent 3 weeks at No. 1 in New Zealand, 8 weeks at No. 1 in Australia, reached No. 5 in Canada, and No. 12 on the U.K. singles chart.true colours

Here in the U.S., “I Got You” made its debut on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 in late August 1980, and found a home at No. 53 for a week in early October 1980.  It would be the only Hot 100 hit the band would have in America, but not by much.  Split Enz just missed the Hot 100 two more times, in 1981 with “One Step Ahead” (from 1980’s WAIATA) and in 1982 with “Six Months In A Leaky Boat” (from TIME AND TIDE).

Neil Finn and two of his fellow Split Enz band mates – Eddie Rayner and Paul Hester – fared much better in the second half of the 80s as Crowded House, reaching the Hot 100 five times between 1987 and 1991, reaching No. 2 in 1987 with “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and No. 7 with “Something So Strong.”

In 2001, “I Got You” was voted as the 11th best New Zealand song of all time, and in 2005, the band was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) music awards hall of fame, just four months after Split Enz and Crowded House drummer Paul Hester sadly committed suicide. 

Neil and Tim and the band have done reunion shows over the years, but the status of both bands has been pretty quiet as of late.  Of course, it’d be awesome to see them live (in whatever configuration), but for now, I’ve got their music, and that’s all I want…

song of the day – “Redemption Song” | BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS | 1980.

Hard to believe it’s been 35 years today since we lost the amazing Bob Marley.  I didn’t know much about Bob until years after his passing, but before the 80s were done, I made sure he had a spot in my record collection.  And, he’s still there.

Released in the Summer of 1980, Bob’s 12th album UPRISING was the last studio album he & The Wailers put out while he was still alive.  From that album is the incredible “Redemption Song,” which he wrote in 1979, around the time he was diagnosed with cancer.  According to his widow, Rita Marley, “he was already secretly in a lot of pain and dealt with his own mortality, a feature that is clearly apparent in the album, particularly in this song.”

But, for many months, the cancer didn’t stop Bob from touring in support of UPRISING.  He and his band had played to 100,000 people in Milan, Italy, and then they toured America, including two shows at Madison Square Garden.  Bob’s last performance was at the former Stanley Theater (now The Benedum Center For The Performing Arts), in Pittsburgh, PA, on September, 23, 1980.

While a full band recording of “Redemption Song” exists and appears on the 2001 remastered edition of UPRISING, the gorgeous original version of “Redemption Song” was just Bob and his acoustic guitar.   bob marley acoustic guitar

“Won’t you help to sing / These songs of freedom? / ‘Cause all I ever have / Redemption songs, Redemption songs.”

U2’s Bono once said, “I carried Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’ to every meeting I had with a politician, prime minister, or president.  It was for me a prophetic utterance or as Bob would say ‘the small ax that could fell the big tree.’  The song reminded me that freedom always comes with a cost, but for those who would prepare to pay it, maybe ‘emancipation from mental slavery’ would be our reward.” 

Mutabaruka, a Jamaican musician, dub poet, actor and broadcaster, who put out 14 albums between 1982 and 2009, chose “Redemption Song” in 2009 as the most influential recording in Jamaican music history.

“Redemption Song” is one of the most-beloved songs of all time, and in ROLLING STONE’s 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, it was ranked at No. 66.  It has been covered by the likes of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Stevie Wonder, The Chieftains (with Bob’s son, Ziggy Marley), Afropop artist Angélique Kidjo, and prolly the two most famous versions, by The Clash’s Joe Strummer in 2002 before his death, and a version featuring both Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash (and both songs were produced by Rick Rubin).  In Paris in December 2015, Madonna, along with her son, David, did a live cover version of “Redemption Song” to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks there a few weeks before.

I know “Redemption Song” is prolly most-referred to as a protest song, but for me, it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard – a song not just of freedom, but encompassing hope, peace, faith, love and yes, redemption.  Bob would have been 71 this year.  Sometimes I catch myself wondering what life would have been like if cancer hadn’t taken him at such a young age.  Would their be so much anger and hate and violence and negativity around the world if he were still here?  Hard to say, but I’m betting my record collection and yours that the world would be a better place today if he was here to have a say in it.

song of the day – “I Don’t Mind At All” | BOURGEOIS TAGG | 1987.

The short-lived 80s Alt-Rock band Bourgeois Tagg (led by Brent Bourgeois and Larry Tagg, hence the name) formed in Sacramento, CA in 1984, along with guitarist Lyle Workman, drummer Michael Urbano and keyboardist Scott Moon.  Brent Bourgeois also played keyboards and Larry Tagg played bass, while both Bourgeois and Tagg shared the lead vocals.BT-1st

The band released 2 albums, starting with 1986’s self-titled effort, which featured a favorite of mine, “Mutual Surrender (What A Wonderful World),” which spent a week at No. 62 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 in May 1986 and 10 total weeks on the chart.  Their second album, 1987’s YOYO, was produced by Todd Rundgren, who had just worked with XTC on their brilliant 1986 album, SKYLARKING.  And it was Todd Rundgren who helped get Bourgeois Tagg their first Top 40 hit. 

yoyoThe band’s second BILLBOARD Hot 100 hit, “I Don’t Mind At All” (from the album, YOYO), debuted at No. 89 in October 1987, the same week of some other major debuting singles, like “Learning To Fly” by Pink Floyd, the remix of “Valerie” by Steve Winwood, The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” (which would go on to become their first U.S. Top 40 hit), Def Leppard’s “Animal,” and the highest debut of the week, Sting’s “We’ll Be Together.”

Like their first hit, “Mutual Surrender,” “I Don’t Mind At All” didn’t mind making the slow but steady climb up the Hot 100, and in 5 weeks, surpassed the peak of “Mutual Surrender.”  A few weeks before Christmas 1987, “I Don’t Mind At All” spent a week at its peak position of No. 38, and stuck around until the end of January 1988, for a total of 17 weeks, which isn’t bad considering some No. 1 songs don’t stick around for that long.  It also reached the Top 40 in Canada.

The following year, the band worked with Todd Rundgren again, this time on Todd’s album, NEARLY HUMAN.  But that was it for Bourgeois Tagg.  Everyone in the band went their separate ways, while Brent Bourgeois managed to score a Top 40 hit of his own in June 1990, “Dare To Fall In Love,” which stopped at No. 32 on the Hot 100.

These days, Brent Bourgeois is involved with the Contemporary Christian Music scene, and released an album a couple of years ago, titled DON’T LOOK BACK, his first album in 20 years, and featured people he had worked with in the past, like Todd Rundgren, Julian Lennon, Charlie Peacock and the other members of his old band.

When I think of Bourgeois Tagg, though, I think of the Alt-Rock gem “Mutual Surrender” and “I Don’t Mind At All,” that gorgeous, 2-and-a-half minute acoustic and string-driven Top 40 oddity that doesn’t happen very often.  But, when it does happen, I don’t mind at all…

song of the day – “While You See A Chance” | STEVE WINWOOD | 1980.

I was 13 going on 14 when I discovered this gorgeous, synth-driven gem, most likely on WIGY, out of Bath, Maine – the favorite station of my youth, and later, on AMERICAN TOP 40 with Casey Kasem.  I knew nothing of Steve Winwood, then 32 going on 33, but at the time, it didn’t matter.  In 1981, all that mattered when it came to knowing about Steve Winwood is that he put out a song that would be dear to my heart for all time.

Steve Winwood was born in Greater Birmingham, England, and was in the high-profile bands The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Ginger Baker’s Air Force before he started his solo career in 1977.  His second solo effort, ARC OF A DIVER, which was a hit with fans on both sides of the Atlantic, achieving Silver sales status in the U.K., and was certified Platinum here in America, largely due to the success of “While You See A Chance.”

Though I had never heard of any of the bands Steve was in prior to “While You See A Chance,” it was the minute-long synthesizer introduction that initially caught my ear, which is kinda funny to think about now, after learning the introduction wasn’t intended on being part of the song at all.  The introduction was supposed to be a drum track, but it got deleted and Steve had to rework it.  And it’s the best thing that could have happened to the song, not to mention Steve’s solo career.

I was also pleased because, at a time I wasn’t buying full albums, Steve included the whole 5-minute-plus album version on the single (or at least the version I had).  Most singles then had edited versions of their album counterparts, and for this song, most radio stations (and AT40) used the shorter version that appears in the video.

“While You See A Chance” went on to spend 2 weeks at No. 7 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 in April 1981 and more than 4 months on the chart.  It also reached No. 3 in Canada, No. 16 in Australia, the Top 30 in Holland and New Zealand, and a surprising peak of No. 45 in Steve’s U.K. homeland.

back in the high lifeMy love and appreciation for the music of Steve Winwood would only grow with time, including older gems like The Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’” (The Blues Brothers covered this in 1980; a favorite), Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” Traffic’s “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys,” and with solo hits like “Higher Love” (with Chaka Khan), “Freedom Overspill,” “Back In The High Life Again” and “The Finer Things” (all from his biggest album, 1986’s BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE), “Roll With It” (especially the kick-ass 10-minute remix), “One And Only Man,” “Don’t You Know What The Night Can Do?” and both 1982 and 1987 versions of “Talking Back To The Night” and “Valerie.”roll with it 12%22

On a personal note, today I learned that my dream job I had applied for (for the third time) went to someone else (deserved), and without the courtesy of a interview (also deserved).  In 1986, five years after “While You See A Chance” and me fresh out of broadcasting school, I typed up my first radio résumé, all for the dream job in radio I wanted way back then but never got.  Though I still don’t have any formal experience with this particular position, it’s a job I could do in my sleep; I feel it with every fiber of my being.  And that was my last chance.

When Steve Winwood was struggling to find an audience with his solo career, he found a lyricist in Will Jennings, and they co-wrote “While You See A Chance.”  Will Jennings worked with Steve Winwood on several of his other hits, plus big hits for folks like Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, and the Academy Award-winning songs “Up Where We Belong” by Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes, and “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion.

According to Will Jennings, the lyric “While you see a chance, take it / Find romance, fake it / because it’s all on you” is “about realizing that you are all alone in this life and you have to do with it what you can.”  And, he’s right.  Though I lost out on my dream job for the third and final time, at least I tried for it.  It was a chance I couldn’t NOT take. 

If there’s something out there you know is for you, don’t hesitate and take that chance.  Even if the answer is no, or it doesn’t work out the way you want, you have to at least try for it and take the chance, while you can still see it…

song of the day – “Love Song” | MADONNA & PRINCE | 1989.

It’s been two-and-a-half weeks since Prince died at the age of 57, and his music is still fresh in my mind and on the iPod in my car.  I half-joke with people that 80s music is all I know.  I couldn’t build you a chair, I suck at most sports, I don’t know crap about cars, and I couldn’t draw you a comic book, but I can give you more info on most 80s music than you ever wanted to know.  It’s not a bad thing, it’s just what I know. 

It’s funny – whenever one of my friends has a question about an 80s song, they usually come to me first for the answer.  And, most times I’ll have an answer at the ready.  What’s even more funny is when I learn something new about a song (or songs) I have loved for many, many years.  The song I’m referring to (in this case) is “Love Song” by Madonna & Prince.hung up

I don’t know how I ever missed this, but there is a line in “Love Song” that goes, “Time goes by so slowly for those who wait…”  That line ended up being a prominent line used in Madonna’s 2005 hit, “Hung Up” (from her amazing CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR album).  “Hung Up,” which heavily samples ABBA’s 1979 hit, “Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight),” reached No. 7 on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 here in the U.S., and still holds the Guinness World Record for reaching No. 1 in the most countries – 41.  It was also the biggest BILLBOARD Dance hit for the entire 00s decade.

“Love Song” appeared on Madonna’s brilliant fourth studio album, 1989’s LIKE A PRAYER, which is my favorite Madonna album of the 80s.  Prince, as it turns out, played guitar on three songs on the album, all uncredited – “Act Of Contrition,” “Keep It Together” and the album’s No. 1 title track.  In addition, Prince and Madonna collaborated on what would be the album’s third of 11 songs, “Love Song.”  They recorded the song at Prince’s Paisley Park studio, and though they were friends, they had never worked together before.  They wrote a bunch of songs together, but the only one that clicked for her was “Love Song.”

Though “Love Song,” co-written and co-produced by Madonna & Prince, was never released as a single, it did help propel the LIKE A PRAYER album to No. 1 on the album charts in at least 12 countries, including the U.S., where it spent 6 weeks at No. 1 on BILLBOARD’s Top 200 album chart from late April through early June 1989.madonna prince tweet

In the wake of Prince’s sad passing, his music is being discovered and rediscovered by people all over the planet, which is truly great but bittersweet at the same time.  Even Madonna mentioned the last line in “Love Song” in her tweet about Prince.  The last line in “Love Song” goes, “This is not a love song that I want to sing…”  Well, it’s a love song everyone’s singing again now, including yours truly…
