xmas song of the day – “Santa Baby” | MADONNA | 1987.

Happy Holidays!  Since it’s the first year of my blog, and since it’s the last year for my Annual Holiday Show on my little 20-year-old 80s radio program, STUCK IN THE 80s (on WMPG community radio in Portland, Maine), I wanted to present to you THE 31 DAYS OF 80s XMAS SONGS, or, 31 of my favorite 80s holiday musical treats.

For Day 15 of the 31 DAYS OF 80s XMAS SONGS, it’s another favorite from the 1987 benefit Xmas album, A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS – Madonna’s cover of the 1953 Eartha Kitt seasonal classic, “Santa Baby.”

For Madonna’s cover of the Jazzy tongue-in-cheek Xmas wish list to Santa, she was inspired by Eartha Kitt’s 1963 re-recording of the song and based her own version on that recording.

Apparently, when recruiting artists to perform on A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS, John F. Kennedy, Jr. (whom Madonna reportedly dated at some point in the 80s) reached out to Madonna to help seal the deal, and she chose to cover “Santa Baby.”

“Santa Baby” is short but fun, and it’s been a favorite of mine for nearly 30 years, and has always been a favorite to play on my annual holiday shows…
