song of the day – “I Won’t Stand In Your Way” | THE STRAY CATS | 1983.

rant n' raveMany folks may know the history of the Long Island, New York Rockabilly legends The Stray Cats, and how they got their big break in the U.K. before returning to the U.S., and many folks may remember them for their big Top 10 hits “Rock This Town,” “Stray Cat Strut” and “(She’s) Sexy + 17.”

But, it’s their fourth and final Top 40 single on the BILLBOARD Hot 100 that came to mind today – the very under-appreciated Rockabilly ballad, “I Won’t Stand In Your Way.”  And many folks may have forgotten about it, but not me…

The second single released from the band’s third album, 1983’s RANT N’ RAVE WITH THE STRAY CATS (produced by a legend in his own right, Dave Edmunds), “I Won’t Stand In Your Way” spent a few months on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 35 the week before Christmas 1983, and also reached the Top 30 in Canada.

“I Won’t Stand In Your Way” wasn’t like any of the Cats’ other singles, or even like anything else on RANT N’ RAVE or its predecessor, BUILT FOR SPEED (also produced by Dave Edmunds).  It’s a cool Doo-Wop / Rockabilly ballad written by Stray Cat frontman Brian Setzer that could have come straight out of 1959.  I think that’s what drew me to it.

If you haven’t heard this gem in awhile, or if you don’t even know it at all, do yourself a favor and check it out.  I promise I won’t stand in your way…
